This was a fun first episode. I’m down for something that’s silly in this way. Main character is just doing his job defending the Demon Lord and has these heroes crossing his path. Then he sees an absolutely gorgeous Priestess and falls hard for her. That’s not a shock, especially when said Priestess is voiced by HanaKana. That voice could melt any heart! I totally respect him for taking his shot even if it meant tossing aside his responsibilities.
This is using the isekai idea in a solid enough way. Normally a demon wouldn’t be falling for a human. But if that demon was a reincarnated human? Yeah, that would make plenty of sense. And honestly it would also explain his lack of desire to move up the ranks either. He’s seemingly the most powerful person in the world (as isekai usually demands), but no desire to knock off the Demon Lord himself. He didn’t really expand on why he didn’t want to become that himself. Maybe he didn’t want the responsibility? It’s not like he’d have to lead a war on humanity if he didn’t want to (unless his hand was forced).
Yoki may have gone a bit over the top with taking her rejection, but I get him being in a tricky spot. It’s a spot he put himself in honestly. He didn’t have the drive to do anything. Still sees himself as human enough that he refused to kill anyone, but the longer time went on the more he’d be pressured to do just that. I’m guessing the Demon Lord was unaware of how much stronger Yoki was than him or I can’t imagine he’d be threatening his subordinates like that.
Curious to see where they want to go with the mage girl. I’m not sure if they want to make her into someone that feels ashamed of pushing to leave Cecilia behind and to finish the mission. They might also just want to make her intensely jealous of Cecilia. We know the hero proposed to Cecilia himself. It was turned out, but clearly he was interested enough. It’s entirely possible she picked up on that and was tempted to use the chance to get rid of the competition. I’m just not sure if they want to make her a bit flawed or a legitimate antagonist.
I could understand her just being conflicted. They were in a tough spot objectively. Leaving a friend behind is a bad thing to do. But they also had all those lives on their shoulders. Standing pat and letting those people die from this ongoing invasion would be a bad thing as well. I’d say it reflects the desperation of the situation that they kept attacking someone that they couldn’t defeat. I’d like to think that wasn’t just stupidity.
The fun for me was just him outright confessing to Cecilia. The last thing she ever expected in such a tense situation like that…was that he’d say that! I loved that. I also approve of him picking himself up later and outright saying that he’ll try confessing again later. That’s to take nothing away from Cecilia herself though. She’s responsible, thinking about the world picture, and she gave him a push to actually use his powers to help people. If he still thinks of himself as human then…do something! He’s not tied down by anything beyond his hesitation to act. Cecilia could be the greatest hero of this story. Instead of letting Yoki be a threat or stagnate through in action, she’s got him out doing good. Great girl. I’m not shocked he fell for her.
This was just a fun first episode. It does take the world situation seriously enough to comment on things like how humanity very well might start turning on itself. But it’s also having fun with this. Yoki is already winning over Cecilia with his honesty. Heck, even Cecilia’s mother is already in favor of this guy. She clearly wanted to test him a bit, but beyond that she did him a favor in bringing up the marriage proposals. Give a bit of a push while also creating an opportunity for Cecilia to admit to turning them down. If the show can maintain this level of fun then I think it’ll be a good one to keep track of.
