Jumping into a new season can carry mixed feelings with it. It’s sad to see great shows leave, but there’s also some excitement into trying out some new shows. No baggage with those completely new shows and can see which ones grab you. I wasn’t expecting too much from this show when seeing the summary and trailer. But it was more enjoyable than I thought it’d be. This is yet another show in the whole “kicked out of the hero’s party” niche. Some of those shows have been better than others and some have just been utterly frustrating. This had a solid start that could make for a comfortable show if it can keep this up.
One thing that really helps is that Orhun actually stood up for himself. So many guys kicked out of the party have low self-esteem or actually just believe the other side is right. But Orhun is both shocked at this turn and stands up for himself. If he argued successfully then there’s be no show of course. But the important thing is that he tried! And he was right to stand his ground. He converted over to enchanter because they needed that hole filled and he was the best suited to it. But it could’ve been any of them that filled that spot. It was even easier of course because he wasn’t the #1 swordsman of the team, but he still did his part. If they wanted a better overall enchanter that’s one thing. But they could’ve let him go back to being a swordsman and not throw him out.
Another element that helped here was that the “hero” wasn’t the worst person. I could certainly imagine his arm getting twisted by the more scumbag types within the party. He did go along with it so he’s hardly that great a guy, but at least he didn’t seem thrilled about it. Doesn’t make it any better though. Orhun was his childhood friend and they formed this party together. Dumping him for any reason was a pretty tasteless thing to do. But honestly it was nice to have one of those three party members not being absolute jerks. The girl was easily the worst. Even after Orhun agreed to take his leave she couldn’t resist being an absolute bitch.
I honestly like the lead here. Orhun was actually shocked at being kicked out and clearly hurt by the whole thing. A lot of these guys just don’t care or treat it as natural. But he really was knocked down by this and was actively looking to avoid getting into parties for the foreseeable future. Being a solo adventurer was looking to be his focus if not for fate turning him in a different direction. And it’s just reasonable that he was taking his time to see how his current skills hold up and steadily testing himself. He just felt very reasonable. You could see how down he felt when talking to the shop keep and how hesitant he was to accept Seima’s offer since it would initially be intended to have him act purely as an enchanter which he’s now soured on.
It’s honestly fun that while Orhun had all this in mind…he simply couldn’t resist the puppy dog eyes of Sophia. Thankfully she’s a very sweet girl since she’s definitely got the ability to get him twisted around her finger! Tempted him into having dinner with her and then made sure he didn’t simply turn down the offer that was being sent his way. She definitely needs to avoid putting herself into danger (by teaming up with guys that will abandon her), but I do like her. Sophia clearly has some skills going for her and knows when to apply pressure!
I don’t expect this to be one of my favourites of the season. It was a solid start, but I don’t think it will resonate with me that much! But this was a good way to start things off. The main character is pretty easy to empathize with and doesn’t seem too overpowered as of yet. Now we just have to see how things play out with this job and how it all leads to him obviously getting into a party with Sophia and a few others. I don’t think that I’ll cover more than this episode with how busy this season will be, but this was a good way to start things off.
