There will admittedly not be much for me to say about this one. Just a cute little romcom between a guy that is overly expressive and a girl that isn’t expressive at all. It’s basically right there in the title. The standout thing while watching this episode was wondering how far they were going to take this. There’s always the chance for things to spiral out of control and get a bit frustrating. But this episode walked the line pretty well and delivered a solid opening episode.
I was worried at points that Oota’s antics would turn this closer to the first episode of Nagatoro. Kashiwada isn’t emotionless, just lacking in expressiveness. So in a sense things were getting close to (and maybe did reach) the level of bullying. Constantly surprising her, making loud noises, and trying to mess with her food. Honestly if the episode didn’t have Kashiwada straight up confess her feelings I’d start wanting to punt Oota out a window. If she’s fallen for him then she’s not all that bothered by his antics. Part me does think it’s just the consequence though of her being incredibly lonely and ready to fall for anyone that would give her a decent amount of attention.
That did lead to one of the more amusing confessions I’d seen in anime. Kashiwada was pretty straight up about being in love with Oota. And thankfully the classic approach of him getting rattled by it and lying about hating her didn’t cause a problem. Because he’s so insanely obvious she was able to see that her chances were great and she didn’t have to worry. She just has to be patient until he accepts his own feelings.
Thankfully the supporting cast is also good here. Oota’s friends aren’t going to put up with his BS past a certain point. Watching Kashiwada for the day? Sure, why not. That’s not overly harmful and they were naturally curious about her anyways. But when Oota was turning things into a one-sided attack with the hose…they evened the odds and absolutely sided with her against him! They weren’t aiming at anyone besides him. Now fair enough that he’s got the bigger weapon here, but he’s also easy to read with how obvious he is about everything. And I think both those guys understood that Kashiwada is a bit lonely. She doesn’t seem to have many if any friends so I could see them being active wingmen in this relationship.
Not a lot post here. There’s not much for me to say and no reason to drag this out. This was a cute first episode and it thankfully avoided getting problematic for me. I’m pulling for Kashiwada who just needs to stay patient until her love interest sorts himself out.
