Saturday is purely unfair this season. There are so many shows I’m excited for coming out that I was left unsure where to start. But this concept seemed fun and I could see this show falling between the cracks. So I did want to at least cover this first episode. And it lived up to my hopes. It should be a really fun and kind of cute show. It’s kind of nice to have a show about a hero. Especially with all the “guy booted from the hero’s party” stuff out there. A reminder that there’s nothing wrong with actually telling the story about a hero. They spice it up enough with his female party all being there to kill him. There are ways to add some variety to familiar premises.
These girls are all absurdly powerful and I kind of love it. You have the daughter of the Demon Lord, a pro Assassin, and…well a BDSM enthusiast. I suppose when one is as capable with poisons as she is that’s plenty devastating. She did after all win the mini showdown between the heroines. It was fun watching them all go at it and showing how capable they actually are. Goes to show that anyone could come out on top between them in a fight if things played to their strengths. Of course it also shows that they are as dangerous to themselves as anyone! That summon would have killed all three of them if Toto hadn’t stepped in.
And that one moment helped establish how crazy strong Toto is! He’s held back by his shyness and inexperience around women. But wow…the guy is a monster! There’s a reason that he was being targeted by so many despite not having done much yet. He literally punched that dragon’s head off! Not that it’d be impossible for these girls to kill him. He really does get knocked out by direct contact! But obviously his good nature and raw skill should be enough to win over the girls. Doesn’t hurt of course that he’s really strong. It probably would take a serious assault on their part to actually kill him.
One episode and one punch in and he already won over Ciel! The loli was an easy pickup! But honestly I get it. She was just excited to be out in the world and free to do as she pleased. I don’t think she had a specific passion with killing Toto, but it was the task given to her. Plus she summoned that monster with the specific purpose of taking down her rivals so she could kill Toto herself. That he managed to gallantly defeat it without trouble probably gave her a jolt. Ciel of course isn’t going to actually throw in the towel right away. She may be easy, but Toto’s mission is to kill her dad! Not going to denounce her pride either by openly admitting to having no desire to kill Toto.
Not to say the other girls are going to last much longer than Ciel did! The good thing in all this is obviously that all the girls have their charms. The assassin Anemone may be a killer, but she’s not a fan of slavery. I like that she dropped her main job the moment she saw that kid being sold off and made that her priority in the meantime. She’s no qualms about her job, but there are things that she simply can’t stand. She was of course plenty strong and able to put up a great fight against that monster. But his ability was going to be a problematic matchup for her. Toto with his pure raw power was a better fit. Instead of cutting up the monster and creating problems…just knock him out with one power shot!
I won’t say that Roa is a “better person” than I thought she was going in. But rather she might just get a kick out of the possibility of Toto turning the tables on her. There’s no doubt she’s enjoyed being the dominant in every situation she’s found herself in. She even managed to drug her rivals and had the advantage there. But against Toto’s pure power she’s not quite as in control as she usually is. And that change in perspective definitely worked on her!
This might be a tough journey for Toto though if he doesn’t build up some resistance! It’s downright hilarious how the girls can basically have their own time to chat just by grabbing him and knocking him out. He might spend most of this journey unconscious! And obviously the pun of him losing consciousness that easily could wear itself out. So hopefully they find ways to keep things fresh and entertaining. But in terms of a first episode this was pretty solid. The girls are cute, the comedy worked, and I like the potential. It’s a predictable path of each girl falling harder for Toto as time goes on, but it’s one I’d be happy to enjoy watching.
