Fans itching for some more Geass will be pleased to hear that Masayuki Ozaki, the General Manager of Overseas Development at Animation Studio Sunrise confirmed that the studio is “looking forward to releasing” the new Code Geass anime project next year!

Code Geass fans looking for more Lelouch will be disappointed, however, as Ozaki went on to say that the project will take place:

in the same world as Lelouch [the protagonist of the earlier Code Geass anime] except with different characters (…) the stage is set in Europe, so we’ll see a lot of European countries.

Beyond that bombshell of a story tidbit, we’ve also gotten word on who the director will be: Kazuki Akane ( of The Vision of Escaflowne, Noein – to your other self).

So Code Geass will continue on without both Taniguchi and Lelouch? Seems like Kazuki-san has some big shoes to fill. Personally, I loved Noein and Escaflowne, and I’m curious to see what Kazuki-san will bring to the franchise. What about everyone else?           He got the ‘Code’ for immortality from his father when he killed him. Hence why he had the Geass symbol in both eyes at the end. So he is immortal, just like CC.

          Lelouch needs to die to activate the immortality power like when his father died once to become an immortal. When Lelouch killed his father he gained the immortallity from the father however it is not activated yet and that is why he was able to use the geass.

          my theory has always been that the reason everyone lost there geass once they became immortal was simply because they got their code from the person who gave them their geass, but because Lelouch got his power from C.C. and got his code from his father, he was still to use his geass, but your theory is also very likely, i like it

          i must say this, hope it doesn’t crush any of your guys hope… I am a true Code Geass fan, Lulu’s top fan! But this is how it works… His Father Charlie was absorbed, not killed by Lelouch, and the other key part is, only the contractor which Charlie had, could kill him. But at the last end, who was C2 talk to? But stabbing someone, it doesn’t mean Lelouch died! They might have resurrect him, it is sincerely possible. I have no doubt that Lelouch is alive, but having taken the Code from his father is impossible by all means. There is 1 key point you must rememebr, C.C can’t have Lelouch dead, I Believe in my heart Lelouch is still there, just watching, the progress in the world, with C.C, maybe happily living, well i have that thought!

          For a moment i agreed with this but… well I’m gonna add on to it. I just rewatched the episode and I agree Lelouch got the second marking in his eye b/c he extended his powers by using his geass on God (not b/c he became immortal). BUT b/c I just watched it, you’ll see he used his extra powerful geass on his parents to get rid of them, quicker. Near the end of episode 21 you’ll even hear the sound of him using his geass… While Charles was choking him, he said “Be Gone” and we see their absorption speed up meaning, as the other person said, Lelouch probably Did kill them.

          After watching the last episode, I’d first thought somehow that Lelouch entered C2′s mind and was living in there but that’s not possible considering only his mother’s geass allowed Her to do something similar to that (being able to communicate with C2 while in another person’s mind + at his “death” we don’t see him using his geass at the last minute). So i’m left to believe his death unlocked his ability to become immortal (as someone else stated) and though I DESperately need Lelouch in Code Geass, it’s quite unnecessary; he did what he had to do and survived (which i’m ecstatic about so)… the story kinda ends there.

          Season 4, however NEEDS Lelouch. I can go this season without him but he BEtter return :/

          There is no proof to your statement. He received Geass in both eyes because he used it a lot. C.C told him this earlier in the anime so please if you have proof that he’s alive I would love to hear it and don’t say because he killed his father.

          Hi mister, several theories to why people think lulu is still alive:
          Just like V2, and C2 (Japanese version) C2=CC, the second season is called R2… possibly hinting at a creation of a second immortal, besides R = rebellion. It is possible that lulu becomes R2 after becoming immortal.
          You are right, C2 did tell lulu that the more he uses his Geass the more powerful it will become, hence the both eyes thing… She also said, you need a strong Geass user to be able to transfer immortality, which lulu has reached. I think C2 gave it to him… she still had the mark on her forehead to transfer lulu’s mother into the collective memories… the mark is indicative that she still has her “immortal powers”. Furthermore at the end, C2 says “the price you have to pay for using your geass on others is a heavy one”… this can hint at the fact that lulu is paying with his life, or the fact that C2 transferred immortality to lulu and she knows how much it sucks to live for eternity. Furthermore, when lulu “died” at the end, his sister who touched him was able to see scenes in his life, which was something C2 was able to do when she had immortal powers (transfer memory via touch). As well, the ending where C2 is talking, she either is looking up at the sky, or she is talking to the carriage driver, whom people suspect is lulu.

          Anyway, I personally like to think lulu is still not dead… there are too many hints that he hasn’t died for him to be dead.

          Nunnally could do this regardless. She could read peoples feeling by touching them. If you watch season 1 I think episode 6 when CC shows up at Lelouch’s place he is hesitant to let her touch his hand. This theory is false going by this. Though at the same time she could have just been able to read feelings and then the theory would be correct. I’d have to watch Code Geass again to further understand her ability.

          but nunnally is able to tell if someone is lying, hence why suzaku never touched her hand afterwards, then there was that lady who helped her run area 11, and lelouch never had actual contact with nunally until he died,probably on purpose too

          all those clues mentioned above were leading to the deleted scene form the original japanese version released on DVD, where lelouch is shown smiling as the guy driving the carriage after C.C talks to him.
          it was deleted, so that fans could figure it out themselves and decide what they wanted to be the ending.

        as I see, C.C. didn’t had her code while she was on that hay sac, or did her hair cover that simbol on her head? I hadn’t saw it
        so if Lelouch is still alive, maybe he could become Zero again, and than: Nanaly and the 2 Zeros would rule eweryting and here’s the happy end, until the new boss (season 3 boss) appears, and maybe Lelouch will marry C.C., or Kallen… probably C.C.

        Lelouch is not dead. He had C2 take his place using the mask since she cannot die. He was elsewhere hiding and watching the whole thing. IF CG3 is in Europe their is little chance we will see Lelouch. Also , is Season 3 taking place after Season 2′s timeline? If so , who are the Britannian’s fighting?? With Britannia now part of the USF is it the EU ? and why would they fight ? Having Lelouch little sister in control of the USF she would not want more death’s and therefore I cannot see a war. Unless they are fighting the remaining aristocrats and their White Knights. Season 3 should prove interesting story line , but I am sorry .. I for one would love to see Lelouch again .. but he will not be back for Season 3. I can see season 4 perhaps … but definetly not season 3.

  so this is either a season 3 continuation or a spiritual successor of Code Geass. Personally, i’d rather think of this as a spiritual successor if they’re gonna start off with a new protagonist inheriting the power of geass…

    I’d call it more of another story in the same universe, and that’s what Sunrise is touting it as, as well. I think its just their attempt to cash in on one of their properties.

    If this new hero thing works, I won’t be surprised if we see a few more down the line, in the same vein as Gundam and Mai Hime/Otome.

      Well, they did establish the power of Geass vaguely so it can branch off to many more protagonists wielding such power. If they set Code Geass to tread a similar path with the Gundam franchise, would CC become the recurring character much like… Haro O_o??

      same here…. i highly doubt it will go as they seem to think especially if it’s going to be in the same time period as the original….. i mean that would make it worse since lelouch IS alive and doing his zero thing at the same time but they wanna switch the whole character base completely? …. don’t see that working at all lol i think people have gotten way to attached to the current characters … lulu, c.c., kallen and what not…. i could only see the new character cast working if they made it in a completely different time period (like way after R1 and R2 or like way before the main storyline). if they don’t then i think it would aggravate people watching it who know lulu and crew are over in japan kicking ass but we gotta get accustomed to some other group over in europe………. sounds like a no go to me……….

  Code Geass isn’t Code Geass without Lelouch! He needs to be there(so he can get wit C.C.)! CG is my passion and of coarse I’m excited for another season…but it just wont feel right.   its acceptable with out lulu for one simple reason, r2 ended perfectly there is nothing left for it to continue and if season 3 would have lulu and related cast then it would be a disaster…
  but since its still about geass then it might be good… my only concern is with the director as i didnt like noein at all….

    Well I reckon there’d be folks out there who’d argue at the perfect ending but I for one would say that yeah it ended in a good way in the sense that most of the lose ends got tied up and it was a pretty good end all things considered. And I for one agree that bringin Lelouch and the cast back would be….over kill really.

    I’d love to see them exploring the origins of Geass more. THAT’d be wicked kool in my books! We can only keep our fingers crossed in regards with the director Nothing like a bad director to screw up a perfectly good story >_<

  When Code Geass first came out i was like wtf is this but after watch the first 3 episode i was in love with this anime and it was because of the main actor and hes life Lelouch now u telling me ur taking he off S3 was you high when you was thinking this or just acting dum Lelouch is CODE GEASS you can not make a S3 with out the main actor die! after watching the last episode i cry like a girl I’m a male age 16 and i cry like when my mom told me my dad die in Haiti I love C-G but with out Lelouch and hes problems he need to solve and make better and what about hes love life 2 anyways you should not call it C-G s3 with out Lelouch its just not right i will always be a big fan of C-G and may be my Fav anime still i die.

  the ending of s2 was well though out and lelouch’s plan played out as planned to a T, an ending befitting the great king of chess, however it’s stated that s3 will probably be set before any of the actions of either of previous series happened, meaning a “resurection” wouldn’t be needed. We may in fact have a brief sight of his younger self, C2 may be met as a two or three episode appearance, before going to japan to help with lelouch’s dads plan, but it’s improbable that she would be the one making the contract, since we know her previous contract to be mao.

  If s3 is set after season’s two and three’s events then it’s highly likely that C2 will be there, as for lelouch I feel we have a glimpse of him through alternate meens then him being alive. It’s probable will see him through C2′s memories the way we did when she gave suzaku a glimpse of everything. We mmay in fact see him through a look into the mask’s people have had to wear in some main event, or perhaps an enemy with the power to get people to see what they want, in C2′s case that would probably be lelouch.

  i would love to see them continue on with lelouch as c2 is talking at the end and says right lelouch i personally have though of quite a few ways in witch he could return from what happened in the anime with out really change the anime much so yea it would be great if they considered doing it as everyone enjoyed the other one with lelouch and the others plus lelouch could have been the driver of the veichle at the end as you didnt get to see the drivers face

  Its dissapointing too know lulu is not comming back, when he IS the whole point to the story and the reason we watched it in the first place.They should give what the viewers want, and that is lelouch. Everybody was anxious to see that lelouch was still alive in the very last episode why give the audience a tease or in this case false hopes if he is not comming back. The show will loose many viewers because their main concern was how lelouch was overcomming his obstacles but now its like starting over another story with the same theme, which seems pretty stupid.

Though as of recent events its very unlikely that they will have him starring in a major role in the world if the next season takes place after R2……..   I think that a show without lelouch as the central character is possible but to ignore him completly would be a bad idea. he had such a large effect that him or Zero should be heavily mentioned regularly. As well, many are waiting to find out if he really died or took C2′s code and became immortal. There was a lot that sugested he was able to survive.

  Well sorry to disappoint you all but in the episode where C2 is explaining her past she explained once you kill the one who gave you power of geass you will simply gain his/her immortality and ability to give people power of geass.

    They room the ending out to make people wonder if he is still alive or dead. But in reality he is actually still alive unless the new director is going to try and take the old ending and change it.

  I think changing the plot of the story is not a good idea because season 1 and 2 ending left me with unsatisfiable impression. thus I hope season 3 will be much better like Lelouch is still alive and he is living together with C.C. something like is much better I guess?without Lelouch is not a code geass anymore. if they decided to change the story, it is much better if they also change the characters, because having the same characters but different storyline will be confusing and frustrating for the people who love the season 1 and 2.

  At the end of season two you can’t see his face driving the cart all cc did was talk to the sky saying she might have been wrong about solitude he was destined for, giving enough proof for death, and his second eye only appeared after talking to god immortality possible after all it’s where his father earned immortality. Cc commented on his eye when he couldnt shut off his power. the manga also splits off two ways one in a different time with the same charaters currently reading on onemanga details still unknown expecting it to be good, and nunnally’s story it could also be that for an anime lulu is in both. Other options previously mentioned story ideas are also possible. Giving opinions are fine writers don’t admit it but they do look at are comments it’s advertisement strategy for those who took any sort of business classes it also helps writing to story not everyone will like it just like final fantasy games there considered great games but some people still don’t like them.   I have my several theories to why I think Lulu is still alive.
  Just like V2, and C2 (Japanese version) C2=CC, the second season is called R2… possibly hinting at a creation of a second immortal, besides R = rebellion. It is possible that lulu becomes R2 after becoming immortal.
  C2 did tell lulu that the more he uses his Geass the more powerful it will become, hence the both eyes thing… She also said, you need a strong Geass user to be able to transfer immortality, which lulu has reached. I think C2 gave it to him… she still had the mark on her forehead to transfer lulu’s mother into the collective memories… the mark is indicative that she still has her “immortal powers”. Furthermore at the end, C2 says “the price you have to pay for using your geass on others is a heavy one”… this can hint at the fact that lulu is paying with his life, or the fact that C2 transferred immortality to lulu and she knows how much it sucks to live for eternity. Furthermore, when lulu “died” at the end, his sister who touched him was able to see scenes in his life, which was something C2 was able to do when she had immortal powers (transfer memory via touch). As well, the ending where C2 is talking, she either is looking up at the sky, or she is talking to the carriage driver, I suspect it is lulu.

  And I’m sitting here waiting for season 3 to come and I personally like to think lulu is still not dead… there are too many hints that he hasn’t died for him to be dead.

  And yeah I would really like to see lulu and sherly in the series , they were a cute / great couple. She still loved him when he had killed her father.
  But that is not possible though, sherly got killed. But still if lulu and CC lives for eternity I would have liked to see them together maybe, as you can see in the series CC got feelings for lulu.
  Another theme:
  Orange knew of Lelouche’s and Suzaku’s plan and helped them out by ordering his men not to fire on Zero, he even smiled when Zerozaku jumped on his shoulder.

  Now would Orange, a man who devoted himself entirely to Lelouche and threw away everything without a second thought be OK with a plan where the sole person he wants to protect in life is actually killed? The answer to that is NO, not even if Lelouche ordered him to accept the plan: he would not go along with it and would protect him with his life. There is only one way that Orange would be OK with a plan like that and thats if he knew about Lelouche’s immortality, which I assume he did as he worked with V.V. in the Geass research base. Orange was OK with this plan as he knew Lelouche would come to no harm and would be able to start a new peaceful life with the woman he loves in a world which he himself had made peaceful.

  Even at the end, we see Orange on his orange plantation, completely content with the way things have panned out, he definitely could not be that happy had Lelouche actually died.

  So this is my thoughts in all this, if lulu wont be comming back in the season 3 I will be very very very disappointed.

    I too am not buying Lelouch’s permanent death for the very same reasons, however, there isn’t enough material to suffice for another season with Lelouch. With the way things were left, I’m pretty content with how his story ended. Besides there is always a chance that another season could ruin it.

    Your last theory is the one I agree with the most, now that I think about it, Orange’s devotion is so strong it could be called an unhealthy mental condition. It is highly unlikely that he’d be so calm and satisfied with the result, even someone as seemingly detached as C2 was upset by Lulu’s “death”.
    I doubt Le louche would want C2 to continue to endure eternity and would want to take it from her out of kindness or because he would not want the strain to be too much and make her desperate to find someone else to make a contract with, risking the rise of a new despot, that Lulu work so hard and sacrificed so much to create, in my opinion, Lulu is too egotistical and too passionate to let that happen.
    Secondly, we don’t really know how the contract works, does Le louche have a choice in the matter; is it inevitable in the sense that he will die or suffer if he does not fulfill his part of the bargain or will it just stick to him whether he wants it or not. So far we can assume that nobody has ever escaped the contract they made, further supporting the likelihood that Lulu is still alive.
    Most of all I really, really want to see Lulu again.

  It’s simply not Code Geass without Lelouch. And the speculation as far as him being alive or dead afer the Zero Requiem… I want him to be alive. I don’t agree with those who say his living would have rendered the Requiem purposeless. He sacrificed everything through what he did. He may have lived, but that does not negate what he did. Besides, everyone assumes he’s dead anyway, so his living really doesn’t effect the world at all. He still took over the world, focusing all the worlds hate upon him, and I guess to a lesser extent Suzaku. Once he did that he removed himself from the world, supposedly ushering in a new era of global peace and cooperation. I’d call that a sucess. As for Shirley coming back, while I did like her character and her death pissed me off just a bit while deepening my dislike for Rolo… She’s staying dead I’m sure. I want Lelouch to be alive, but I fear he won’t even get more than a passing mention, which I think would be a bastardization of Code Geass.

  I don’t think Lelouch died because when ever he told the world of C to get rid of his father his father touched his neck possibly giving him his code since as we found out by watching his father supposedly cared for Lelouch and Nunnally more than his other children hence he sent them away to Japan to avoid them from being harmed by their other siblings desiring to take the throne. Back to why I think he Lelouch didn’t die well if his father gave him his code in the moment before the world of C absorbed him out of his care for his son(seeing as he sent Lelouch and Nunnally away to Japan to protect them if he knew he was going to die he would atleast give the son he spent the effort to protect power that would aid him). Like the many people I have seen state this the code would remain dormant until death which would activate the immortality which took place when Suzaku stabbed him in front of all the masses on the last episode of season 2. This is just my thoughts of the matter after watching the series so many times because its just that good that it doesn’t ever get old. Any of you who feel like arguing against this I’d like to see what other people think of this theory.

  I think the new series will fail. I, personally, got very attached to the characters and was very dissapointed that they will not bring A SINGLE character from the original into this, i found that very disturbing and a big turn off. They could’ve done a spin off of any single freaking character, hell a spinoff about the Ashford Academy would’ve great because it would at least have had Kallen. I’m severely dissapointed in the producers of this third anime.

    Enjoy your spot in the minority there. Most fans are actually curious about the new story. The old cast was great but in the end it was the story and suspense we fell in love with and it can be done anew.
    As for keeping lelouch in the story , I don’t see a realistic way of making it fresh and interesting given how r2 ended.
    My point is people are bitching about absolutely nothing.
